EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
