Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
