McDonald's Netherlands Pulls AI-Created Festive Advertisement Following Online Criticism.
McDonald's has pulled a Christmas commercial produced using AI after receiving significant criticism on social media.
The short ad was created via generative AI clips and was initially uploaded online for the Dutch branch of McDonald's back on 6 December.
Audience Criticism and Decision to Pull
Soon after it aired, viewers on social media denounced the employment of AI in the advert. Many called it "disturbing" and "poorly edited".
"This moment represents an key learning as we investigate the appropriate application of AI," commented a statement from the company.
The commercial was created for the brand by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It portrayed various situations that might go awry over the holidays, using the tagline "the worst time of the year".
A Growing Movement of AI-Generated Ads
Commercials that feature AI-created content have emerged as a growing trend among major brands, especially for the holiday period.
- Another beverage giant has similarly released consecutive AI-generated holiday ads.
- Inherent Limitations: Since segments produced using generative AI are more likely to become unstable the more extended they are, most AI video outputs tend to be roughly short in length.
- Broader Implications: The ad also raised concerns about job displacement in the advertising industry, with some critics pointing out it might affect opportunities for production staff.
Defense from the Creators
After the video's removal, The Sweetshop's head, Melanie Bridge, stood by the project.
Bridge claimed, the development required "seven weeks" and involved creating "numerous versions" which were then shaped afterward "just as we would on any standard production".
"This was not an AI trick," she commented. "The result was a finished piece."
Mixed Public Reception
While the McDonald's ad was largely criticized, the response for some AI-assisted campaigns has been divisive.
For instance, a recent AI-generated holiday spot from another major brand according to analysis achieved a 61% "positive feedback" from the public.
However, other businesses have likewise faced scrutiny for employing AI in marketing. Luxury fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that critics described as "lazy" and "uncanny".
The episode underscores the ongoing debate within the marketing and creative sectors about the balance between technological innovation and creative integrity.
